How to become an ICF certified Coach:
Becoming an International Coaching Federation (ICF) certified coach is a highly respected credential in the coaching profession. The process involves several key steps, from education to practical experience. Here’s a breakdown of the steps you would need to undergo to achieve ICF certification:
1. Choose the Certification Level
- Associate Certified Coach (ACC): This is the entry-level credential.
- Professional Certified Coach (PCC): This is the mid-level credential.
- Master Certified Coach (MCC): This is the highest level of credentialing.
Start by deciding which level of certification you want to pursue. Most people start with the ACC.
2. Complete Coach-Specific Training
- Enroll in an ICF-accredited coaching program. These programs are categorised as:
- Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP): A comprehensive program covering all aspects needed for certification.
- Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH): A more flexible approach where you can mix and match training from different providers.
- Continuing Coach Education (CCE): For advanced learning and specialisation.
Ensure that the program you choose aligns with the level of certification you're pursuing.
3. Accumulate Coaching Experience
- For ACC:
- Complete 100 hours of coaching experience with at least eight clients.
- For PCC:
- Complete 500 hours of coaching experience with at least 25 clients.
- For MCC:
- Complete 2,500 hours of coaching experience with at least 35 clients.
Make sure these hours are documented properly, as you'll need to submit them during your application.
4. Obtain Mentor/Coaching Supervision
- You need to work with a mentor/supervisor coach who is ICF-certified (at the same or higher level you’re applying for).
- ACC: Requires 10 hours of mentor coaching over at least three months.
- PCC & MCC: Similar mentor coaching requirements apply, but tailored to the advanced level of certification.
5. Pass the ICF Credentialing Exam
- After completing your training and accumulating coaching hours, you must pass the ICF Credentialing Exam.
- The exam consists of multiple-choice questions based on the ICF Core Competencies, Code of Ethics, and coaching knowledge.
6. Submit the Application
- Once you have met all the requirements, you can submit your application through the ICF website.
- The application will require documentation of your coaching hours, training, mentor coaching, and a recording of a coaching session (with a transcript for ACC and PCC levels).
7. Review and Approval
- After submission, your application will be reviewed by ICF assessors. If everything is in order, your credential will be granted.
8. Maintain Your Credential
- ICF credentials must be renewed every three years. To maintain your certification, you'll need to complete continuing education and submit a renewal application.
Additional Tips:
- Join ICF Chapters: Getting involved with local or global ICF chapters can provide networking opportunities and additional resources.
- Continuous Learning: Stay updated with new coaching trends and methods through workshops, webinars, and additional certifications.
By following these steps diligently, you can become an ICF certified coach and join a globally recognised community of coaching professionals.
